Renault Megane :: Online Video Ads

Tricks created in the green box
Web-tv is one of the latest trends in the world wide web. It presents the final step in the fusion of the media; it is new, it is fresh and everybody likes to use it.
More and more businesses seize the opportunity to use this new technique to advertise their products. People are always attracted by pictures, but if the pictures move and can be watched for free this is the cherry on top of the whipped cream. Web-tv gives businesses the advantage to be ahead of time and grants them the attention of their users.
One of the first companies to use web-tv for advertising, was Mercedes Benz with their concept Mercedes TV (see: Web TV :: Online Presenter in Action).
But as we know the competition never sleeps, so Renault, lately, drew level with Mercedes. In order to introduce the new Renault Megane, they adapted the concept of the “Tagesschau,” the most important German daily newscast.

This title may be a little irritating, in comparison to Mercedes and the classic “Tagesschau,” Renault’s solution is more of a funny comedy version. The only thing it really has in common with the newscast format is the daily clip presentation. Renault presents 37 clips, one for each weekday, to count down the time till the new Renault Megane is launched on 28 November 2008.
The clips fulfill the purpose of informing the customer about all technical details and innovations of the car. This is done in a clever and entertaining way, but what is it that makes the whole thing funny?
First and foremost the face of the whole presentation - the talented young actor who shows his ability to assume all kind of roles.

Then there is the artistic conception and realization - an elegant and innovative advertising, exactly what we’re used to from Renault. And finally the dealing with current topics, as climate change, rising oil prices and particle pollution in a light and entertaining way.
From a technical point of view, the clips are interesting as well. All of them are shot in a green box. The clips are then added in a flash presentation, which is able to create the different backgrounds and special effects. The clips are definitely worth seeing, from an entertainment point of view, as well as from a technical point of view, even if you don’t like cars.

Editor’s note: Unfortunately, Renault has taken it’s newscast offline.
